A description of Larimar Jewelry
Larimar, also known as Stefilia’s Stone, is a rare kind of pectolite, a striking gemstone that can only be found in the Caribbean. Its color ranges from light-blue, blue-green to dark blue, much like the hues of the Caribbean Sea itself.
On November 22, 1916, a Parish priest from Barahona named Father Miguel Loren, asked for authorization to explore and mine a particular blue rock that he had come across. During this time, people in the Dominican Republic had no idea what Pectolites were and so the request was not granted.
It was in 1974 when Miguel Mendez and Norman Rilling came across beautiful blue stones at the bottom of the Range of Bahoruco. The stone was called Blue Stone by the natives who believed that it came from the sea. Miguel, however, coined a different name for the stones.
He took the Spanish translation for sea which was mar and combined it with the name of his daughter, Larissa. And so the name Larimar was born. Most of the stones they found near the shore were mere sediments. They searched upstream and they found larger amounts of bright blue rocks. And so a mine name Los Chupaderos was formed.
Larimar is a rock that is largely composed of pectolite, sodium and calcium. Pectolite can be found in several locations and yet none of these have the arresting blue color of Larimar. This is what makes Larimar different from other pectolites. This rock is a product of volcanic activity which happened millions of years ago in an island called La Hispanola. It was formed in the depths of volcanic mountains.
The Larimar stone comes with an interesting story. A long time ago a wise prophet declared that Atlantis was once part of the Dominican Republic. This claim has also been affirmed by various authorities in metaphysics. He further said that the one thing that made Atlantis great was the beautiful blue stone that carried astonishing healing powers. The description of the Atlantis stone bears an uncanny resemblance to Larimar.
Aside from healing powers, this magical stone is also said to be able to drive away self-imposed restrictions and can help us discover what we are made for. The Atlantis stone is said to carry affirmative energy and bring peace.

The grading of the stone’s quality is determined according to its crystal formation and color. Some stones come in green and red spots.
